Wave Master ge
ts FlowBarreled at the Wave House
I went to San Diego over Cinco de Mayo weekend to see what this “Bruticus Maximus” (name they gave their FlowBarrel at the Wave House in Mission Beach) is all about. I can tell you that it is significantly different than riding a FlowRider. Basically the Barrel allows you to catch big air and also get tubed as in surfing. While I was
n’t exactly keen on getting vertical during my first time riding, I did manage to carve it up and even got tubed a few times, which was awesome. The FlowBarrel is very intimidating for a few reasons. This thing has four pumps shooting water at an extremely fast rate and when you fall you either launch over the top or you rocket through the pit of the tube where your board turns into a heat seeking assault weapon. Not to mention I rode during Happy Hour on the Saturday before Cinco de Mayo so the place was packed with all eyes on the wave…..no pressure Wave Master. Overall, it was a great experience trying out their wave, but it is also nice to come home to our magic wave here in the desert. For anyone thinking about trying out the FlowBarrel, I highly recommend coming to the Westin Kierland to learn how to shred the Kierland FlowRider before taking on the “Bruticus Maximus”. My goal was to get shacked on a “B-Max” and in the ocean during the same weekend, but it was hard to get tubed when the Pacific was only pumping little 2-3 footers, so I busted out the ol’ longboard and put those toes on the nose. Like Duke Kahanamoku said, “The best surfer out there is the one having the most fun.”
Surf’s up!
